Farhana is currently the Director of Research at PNBRI. Her research interests include the political economy, particularly the intersection of business and government, as well as labour market institutions in market economies. Farhana spent seven years in investment research before pivoting into public policy, with stints in the federal government and the United Nations Development Program. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from the London School of Economics and a Master of Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Abstract

Many studies have set the backdrop of the returns to labour work in Malaysia in the recent decade. Most recognise that strong economic growth are not translating into gains in terms of compensation for workers. This discussion paper first delves into principal labour statistics that support the possible framing of the problem as an undersupply of “Good Jobs”, being jobs that pay decent wages, secure working conditions, offer growth prospects and social protection, although the opening premise of the argument is centred around wages. It fundamentally aims to move the conversation away from problems to solutions, proposing the creation of a Good Jobs Strategy for Malaysia, drawing upon existing political economy literature. It makes the case for such a strategy and details out a five-point strategy detailing what it entails.
